Exactly as the term denotes, industrial alcohol is a type of alcohol used in industrial applications, and also implies alcohol produced for purposes other than consumption in beverage form.
Industrial alcohol has a wide variety of uses, including as an ingredient in food preservatives, fragrances and cosmetics, as well as in pharmaceutical alcohol when administering shots to patients. Industrial alcohol is also known as one of the ingredients used to make vinegar.
Additionally, it differs from alcohol found in alcoholic beverages in that the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has jurisdiction over industrial alcohol, while the Ministry of Finance administers alcohol used for alcoholic beverages.

Industrial alcohol can further be separated into two types-fermented and synthetic. The difference between these two types is found in their manufacturing method and source ingredients. The primary ingredient for fermented alcohol is agricultural crops, such as sugarcane or corn, and alcohol fermentation is carried out courtesy of an organism called yeast, with the ensuing chemical process yielding fermented alcohol. This same naturally occurring yeast is also used when making alcohol for beverage use.
In contrast, synthetic alcohol is made through the chemosynthesis of naturally occurring ethylene gas.
